Cristina Safta, a dermatologist at the Cronos Med clinic, explains that not only type B ultraviolet rays, which are specific to the hot season, are harmful to the skin, but also type A ultraviolet rays, which also pass through glass and cause skin ageing. "Ideally, sunscreen should be used every day, whether it's winter, summer, whether we go outside or not," she says.
"Ideally, sunscreen should be used every day, whether it's winter, summer, outside or not. Why? Type A ultraviolet rays, the ones that make us photo-age, cause skin cancers and pigmentation spots, also penetrate windows: car windows, apartment windows and so on. That is their downside. Because if we're talking about type B ultraviolet, the ones we usually see in the summer, the ones that tan us, there you have a direct factor. You see: it reddens your skin if you haven't put SPF on properly, or if you don't have very fair skin you're going to tan directly, you see something on your skin. Ultraviolet type A, from them you won't see for many years in your face, and that's when it's very important to use all the time," she explained on Tuesday night's Medika TvCristina Safta.
"The mineral screen stays on top of the skin and mirrors these UV rays. The screens that we usually find on the market are those with a chemical filter, which are much more comfortable, they go into the skin, don't get on the skin, don't leave a whitish film, but they have the risk of developing irritation or allergy. So we should be cautious, at least children should buy sunscreen creams that say on the packaging that they have a mineral sunscreen", the doctor explained.
She pointed out that these sunscreens should be applied in the morning, and in the evening the areas on which they have been applied should be cleaned.
