Lower blepharoplasty

(lower eyelid surgery) is surgery that removes excess skin and bags of fat from under the eye.

The skin loses elasticity as it ages. Gravity also intervenes, causing excess skin to collect on the lower and upper eyelids.
Excess skin on the lower eyelid collects as wrinkles and bumps.

WHAT TYPE OF PROCEDURE?

Based on an assessment of factors such as facial muscle structure and bone structure, your plastic surgeon will tell you how much skin, muscle and fat he or she recommends be removed.

  • mark the areas of excess tissue to be removed
  • make an incision about 2 mm below the eyelash insertion
  • tissue and fat will be removed using scalpels, scissors, radiofrequency cutting devices and lasers
  • apply sutures or tissue adhesive to smooth and reshape the eyelid area
  • there is the possibility of using lasers to smooth the skin and wrinkles in the eyelid area

AFTER OPERATION

  • for a few days the area under the eyes will be swollen and numb, even bruised for up to a week, but cold compresses help reduce the swelling.
  • you will be prescribed painkillers to take as needed
  • you will use eye drops to maintain an optimal humidity level
  • you will sleep in a position where your head should be higher than your chest
  • you will avoid strenuous physical activity during the first two weeks
  • you should get as much sleep as possible and avoid activities that can dry your eyes (reading, watching TV, wearing contact lenses or using a computer)
  • during the first two weeks after surgery it is recommended to wear dark sunglasses to protect the eyes from irritation caused by wind or sun
  • you will be able to return to your normal activities after ten days

RESULTS

The results are long-lasting. The operation to remove excess skin and fat from the lower eyelid can only be done once.
