Stretch marks

why they occur, how they are treated and how they can be prevented

If you have stretch marks, you definitely want them to disappear because, although the lines and indentations on your skin are not a danger to your health, they are not at all aesthetic and they create discomfort. Stretch marks can appear on the abdomen, chest, hips, thighs or buttocks and affect both women and men, and sometimes even children.

Whether we are talking about recent or older (mature) stretch marks, they remain a subject of research and a challenge for medicine. With revolutionary treatment methods, such as those you can find at Cronos Med, they can be improved and even cured.

WHAT ARE STRETCH MARKS AND WHAT CAUSES THEM

Stretch marks are a type of scarring that occurs when the skin stretches or shrinks suddenly, i.e. when you gain weight rapidly or lose a lot of weight suddenly, during pregnancy, during puberty (growing taller) or due to a genetic predisposition. These abrupt changes cause stress to the skin, which contains collagen fibres (which keep the skin firm) and elastin fibres (which give elasticity). The fibres break down and scars appear in the deep tissues of the skin, and the surface of the dermis looks like white- or pinkish-purple lines. As a result of these breaks, the skin tries to recover and stretch marks appear.

WHO GETS STRETCH MARKS

Stretch marks can affect both women and men and can occur at any age. It is not known why some people get it and others do not. However, there are certain risk categories.

Stretch marks are more common in women, especially during pregnancy. As the foetus develops, the skin on the abdomen should stretch. Hormones that are produced during pregnancy can also weaken collagen fibres in the skin, but this is not a rule. Normally, scars disappear after childbirth, but sometimes special care is needed.

Both women and men suffering from obesity can develop stretch marks and even bodybuilders can be prone to stretch marks.

During puberty, children can develop stretch marks if they gain weight suddenly or gain weight quickly. In this situation it is good for them to know that this is normal and that as they mature the lines and streaks on their skin can smooth out.

CAUSES OF STRETCH MARKS

The exact mechanism by which stretch marks form is not well understood and studies are still being done to shed more light on this skin weakness. Research so far has shown that stretch marks have multiple causes and are mainly caused by three things: physical changes in the body, damage to the structure of the skin (by altering collagen and elastin fibres) and the action of certain hormones.

Here are the most common reasons for stretch marks:

  • sudden weight gain or loss;
  • sudden growth in height (during puberty);
  • pregnancy (especially in the 3rd trimester);
  • breast augmentation surgery;
  • muscle growth (bodybuilding);
  • increased steroid levels (either from steroid drugs or from conditions such as Cushing's syndrome);
  • Marfan syndrome (a genetic disease that causes changes in the fibers of the skin structure);
  • long-term administration of corticosteroid drugs (creams, lotions) because they reduce collagen levels;
  • the existence of frequent cases in the family or genetic predisposition.

SYMPTOMS OF STRETCH MARKS

One of the first signs of stretch marks is a change in the appearance of the skin, which begins to thin and turn pink. In some cases irritation or itching may occur. Also, streaks and lines in the skin change colour over time. They may fade or disappear, but this is a long-lasting process. Not all stretch marks look the same. Their appearance varies depending on how old they are (recent or long-standing), what caused them, the area of the body where they appeared and your skin type.

Among the most common issues they can have are:

  • recesses/ditches or lines;
  • pink, red, black, blue or purple indentations;
  • light-coloured ditches;
  • dimples/lines in the abdomen, chest, hips, thighs and buttocks;
  • indentations and lines covering large areas of the body;
  • vertical stretch marks (e.g. if there is a rapid accumulation of pounds);
  • horizontal stretch marks (e.g. sudden increase in height).

Stretch marks are not painful and can disappear on their own or with the help of a treatment recommended by your doctor. It is advisable to consult a doctor if you are concerned about the appearance of stretch marks or if they extend over large areas of skin. Only the doctor, after a close examination of your skin and on the basis of your medical history, can give you a correct diagnosis and recommend a treatment or therapeutic procedures suited to your needs.

TYPES OF STRETCH MARKS

Specialists divide stretch marks into two broad categories, taking into account how they form, when they appear and how they look:

Striae albae

white stretch marks, which have appeared for some time, so they are mature

Striae rubrae

pink or red stretch marks, which have recently appeared and can be treated with different methods and aesthetic treatments

LPG TREATMENT RESULTS

Only your specialist can make a correct diagnosis, after careful examination of your skin and based on your medical history. It is very important to give your doctor all the information he or she needs in order to make a correct diagnosis and recommend the right treatment. Here are some of them:

  • when you first noticed the stretch marks;
  • if there are any symptoms other than streaks and indentations on the skin;
  • if you take other medicines;
  • if you frequently use cortisone-containing creams.

Thus, the specialist will be able to figure out the possible cause of the stretch marks, what the treatment options are (with advantages and disadvantages) and what results you can expect.

TREATMENT OF STRETCH MARKS

Although they remain a subject of study and continue to be a challenge for medicine, stretch marks can be treated and even visibly smoothed with the latest technology. After a specialist consultation, your doctor may recommend several types of procedures, depending on your needs.

CARBOXYTHERAPY

One revolutionary method is carboxytherapy. Stretch marks are actually breaks in the collagen fibres of the skin structure, and carboxytherapy creates new collagen fibres that strengthen the skin and improve its appearance. Basically, the specialist increases blood circulation by injecting carbon dioxide into stretch marks. This stimulates the red blood cells to move quickly to the affected regions and once they reach their destination, blood circulation in those areas is stimulated. This helps to repair skin elasticity.

Medical specialists recommend that, after the procedure, the patient should not exercise for two hours and avoid hot baths for four hours. Carboxytherapy is also used for cellulite reduction and lipolysis.

VIVACE

Another method to get rid of stretch marks or to improve them is Vivace. The microneedling procedure uses fractionated double radiofrequency and stimulates the natural production of collagen. Thus, the skin gains firmness and can recover better. The effects of the treatment are seen over the course of sessions, it may even take four sessions, done a month apart and lasting up to six months. It may be necessary to repeat the procedure, according to the treatment schedule indicated by the specialist.

CHRONOSDERM, DERMAPEN

The colour of stretch marks fades until they are completely lost and they become less visible with the CronosDerm procedure. The treatment is based on the skin's power to regenerate itself, naturally, through the production of collagen and elastin following micro-trauma deep within the skin. With the help of 300 steel nano-needles, 25,000 microscopic channels per minute are created in the deep layers of the skin. These close quickly, but not before the nutrients delivered by the Dermal Infusion spray reach the skin.

At Cronos Med and Cronos Beauty you can also opt for Dermapen on the recommendation of specialists, depending on your needs.

PRX TREATMENT

Stretch marks can also be treated with PRX T33. This is a not so aggressive chemical peel that can provide the results of a biorevitalization without the need for needles. The PRX T33 treatment is a medium exfoliation, does not negatively affect the outer layer of the skin and works in the deeper layers of the dermis. Basically it is a stimulus for the regeneration of skin structures, so that stretch marks are visibly improved, depending of course on their age and the quality of the patient's skin.

NON-INVASIVE LPG TREATMENT

The LPG medical platform is another state-of-the-art technology brought to Romania by Cronos Med for cellular stimulation. The treatment is non-invasive and acts on the adipocytes so that they gradually eliminate deep fat deposits that cannot be removed by diet and sport. The method is mainly used in the treatment of cellulite, but it has also proven to be very effective in reducing stretch marks, precisely because it stimulates the natural production of collagen.

OTHER TREATMENTS FOR STRETCH MARKS
  • Fractional CO2 laser - is a minimally-invasive treatment that can improve older (white) stretch marks. Studies have shown that, in some cases, scars have disappeared after five sessions. The treatment requires a recovery period, because it basically produces a controlled burn.
  • Microdermabrasion - uses small crystals to exfoliate the top layer of skin. It may, in combination with the peel, help treat recent stretch marks (red or pink).

HOW STRETCH MARKS CAN BE PREVENTED

It is very important to know that you can't always prevent stretch marks (especially if it is genetic), but there are, however, some steps you can take to reduce the risks:

  • try to maintain a normal body weight;
  • avoid drastic diets;
  • eat foods rich in vitamin A and C to maintain healthy skin;
  • control your weight during pregnancy;
  • consume enough fluids to keep your skin hydrated.

At Cronos Med, before determining the right treatment method for you, we will always do a health assessment. The specialist doctors will explain to you what each recommended procedure entails and only then will you be able to decide whether or not to go ahead with it. In addition, the latest medical means and technologies guarantee risk-free therapies.
