Botulinum toxin treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis was approved by the FDA in 2004, for patients suffering from excessive underarm sweating that antiperspirants failed to control.

Research shows that this procedure is effective and risk-free, both for the underarm area and for other areas that show excessive sweating: palms, heels, craniofacial area.

ACTION MODE

Dysport is made from botulinum toxin type A, which injected in very small doses into the skin under the armpit, affects the signal transmitted by the nerve endings to the sweat glands, preventing sweating.

WHAT THE PROCEDURE CONSISTS OF

Injections are made with a very fine needle. A treatment session lasts a few minutes and does not require anaesthesia, but on request the specialist can apply an anaesthetic cream to minimise the unpleasant effects of the injections. Immediately after the procedure, the treated area will be slightly red. On the day of the treatment, strenuous exercise and sauna use are not indicated.

What is the botulinum toxin procedure for axillary hyperhidrosis?

Excessive underarm perspiration can be difficult to control just by using antiperspirant. Botulinum toxin treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis reduces sweating by up to 90% by blocking a neurotransmitter that transmits signals to the sweat glands, stimulating sweat production. This treatment for excessive sweating can be done in one session at Cronos Med. The doctor will use a very thin needle to inject botulinum toxin under the skin in the underarm area. Generally, between 15 and 25 injections are needed in each armpit for best results. The whole procedure takes between 30 and 45 minutes and is performed without anaesthetic. However, your doctor may apply a local anaesthetic cream to reduce discomfort.

How long do the effects of botulinum toxin treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis last?

Injections for axillary hyperhidrosis start to work after about 2-4 days and the maximum effect is reached after 2 weeks. Although the action treatment for excessive sweating is temporary, the effects are long-lasting and last between 3 and 12 months. Thus, you may need to repeat botulinum toxin injections at intervals between 6 and 12 months, depending on your body's response to the procedure.
