Botulinum toxin treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis was approved by the FDA in 2004, for patients suffering from excessive underarm sweating that antiperspirants failed to control.

ACTION MODE

Dysport is made from botulinum toxin type A, which injected in very small doses into the skin under the armpit, affects the signal transmitted by the nerve endings to the sweat glands, preventing sweating.

Generally, between 15 and 25 injections are needed in each armpit for best results. The whole procedure takes between 30 and 45 minutes and is performed without anaesthetic. However, your doctor may apply a local anaesthetic cream to reduce discomfort.

How long do the effects of botulinum toxin treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis last?

Injections for axillary hyperhidrosis start to work after about 2-4 days and the maximum effect is reached after 2 weeks. Although the action treatment for excessive sweating is temporary, the effects are long-lasting and last between 3 and 12 months. Thus, you may need to repeat botulinum toxin injections at intervals between 6 and 12 months, depending on your body's response to the procedure.
