Stretch marks are a type of scarring that occurs when the skin stretches or shrinks suddenly, i.e. when you gain weight rapidly or lose a lot of weight suddenly, during pregnancy, during puberty (growing taller) or due to a genetic predisposition. These abrupt changes cause stress to the skin, which contains collagen fibres (which keep the skin firm) and elastin fibres (which give elasticity). The fibres break down and scars appear in the deep tissues of the skin, and the surface of the dermis looks like white- or pinkish-purple lines. WHO GETS STRETCH MARKS<\/h3>\n

Stretch marks can affect both women and men and can occur at any age. It is not known why some people get it and others do not. However, there are certain risk categories.<\/p>\n

Stretch marks are more common in women, especially during pregnancy. As the foetus develops, the skin on the abdomen should stretch. The exact mechanism by which stretch marks form is not well understood and studies are still being done to shed more light on this skin weakness.
